Suzanne got home at 8:45am this morning and we were there (ok almost) to pick her up. She had an appointment at her hair salon in NDG so we took the opportunity to go have breakfast. Unfortunately, I didn't have Sabrina's Epipen so our choice was limited. We went to a bakery on Monkland named Cho'cola which is renowned to be nut free

 

Des pompiers d’ici à Lac-Mégantic

«C’est gros. Voir ça sur une image et sur place, ce n’est pas la même affaire. C’est vraiment gros. On dirait une zone de guerre où tout est dévasté», lance le lieutenant Maxime Labonté du Service des incendies de Saint-Paul-d’Abbotsford, à son retour de mission à Lac-Mégantic.

En compagnie de 29 autres pompiers provenant de Saint-Paul-d’Abbotsford, mais aussi de Waterloo, de Bromont, de Lac-Brome, de Shefford et de Roxton Pond, il a passé la journée de samedi à Lac-Mégantic pour y faire un quart de travail de 6h à 18h.

Samedi, les recherches de la Sûreté du Québec pour retrouver les cinq corps qui se trouvent toujours dans les décombres ont été suspendues afin de réorienter la stratégie. Malgré tout, les sapeurs avaient des tâches à accomplir. «On assurait la protection incendie. Il n’y avait pas de recherches, mais des citernes étaient transvidées et il y avait du pompage d’eau contaminée», explique le lieutenant Labonté. Les pompiers invités devaient aussi répondre aux appels de routine à Lac-Mégantic, le cas échéant.
«On était à distance de la zone rouge. Si on s’approchait, on devait porter notre appareil respiratoire, mais on n’a pas approché. On était jumelé avec un pompier de l’Ontario qui est spécialisé dans les matières dangereuses. On était stand-by et on attendait.»
Ce dernier ne se dit pas déçu de ne pas avoir pu participer aux recherches. «Le matin même, on ne savait pas qu’il n’y avait pas de recherche et on ne savait pas ce qu’on allait faire. On s’en allait là pour aider, peu importe la tâche qu’on aurait faite. On a eu un débriefing avant de partir et on se disait qu’on s’en allait là pour aider et supporter les pompiers de Lac-Mégantic. C’est sûr qu’on aime ça quand il y a de l’action, mais on allait là pour aider.»
Rencontre
Le travail des pompiers venus aider leurs collègues n’est pas passé inaperçu aux yeux du directeur du Service des incendies de Lac-Mégantic, Denis Lauzon. Ce dernier les a remerciés de leur aide. «C’était le fun de le voir nous remercier. Ce directeur a géré l’une des plus grosses interventions du Québec», mentionne M. Labonté.
D’ailleurs, les sapeurs ont profité de sa présence pour démystifier l’intervention du déraillement de train à Lac-Mégantic. «La grosse question, c’était de savoir comment ça s’était passé. Cela n’a pas dû être facile sur place. On voulait savoir comment ils avaient réagi. Il nous a dit qu’il a suivi les procédures», raconte le lieutenant Labonté.
Cette rencontre et cet événement ont amené certains officiers à se questionner. «Il peut arriver lors d’un feu de résidence qu’on soit débordé. Là, il y avait une trentaine de bâtiments qui brûlaient avec des explosions et la Ville était coupée en deux. On s’est tous questionné à savoir ce qu’on ferait si c’était chez nous. C’est sûr que les officiers se sont fait un plan. M. Lauzon a respecté les procédures et les appliquées étape par étape», dit Maxime Labonté.
«Je suis content d’avoir été aidé à assurer la sécurité du territoire. C’est une belle expérience malgré le désastre», conclut le lieutenant Labonté.
