A poodle who survived in a van at the Burlington International Airport parking garage for nearly three weeks was left there unintentionally, said police. The dog, a 12-year-old male miniature poodle named Michou, lost half his body weight enduring sub-freezing temperatures, apparently without food or water. The dog is now doing well, according to the Burlington Police. Veterinarians have called the dog’s recovery from critical condition “amazing.”
Temperatures rarely rose above freezing, and plummeted to sub zero during period, Dec. 14 to Jan. 6. He was discovered after a passerby alerted police to a stench coming from the vehicle. Police gave the dog’s owner, Canadian citizen Pascal Bellon, 50, of Frelighsburg, Quebec, a city ordinance ticket for cruelty to animals, which has a waiver fine of $100. Bellon has agreed to give up custody of the dog and pay for veterinary bills related to the pet’s recovery.

The dog is in foster care and is not available for adoption, said police. Anyone who wants to contribute to the dog’s recovery expenses can contact Animal Control Officer Jodi Harvey at 540-2396 or make a donation to a local animal shelter. Burlington Free Press
