Le 5 janvier 1998, un soudain redoux des températures provoque une accumulation sans précédent de verglas sur le Québec. La Montérégie est la plus touchée avec plus de 100 millimètres de pluie verglaçante reçue en quelques jours. 3000 structures du réseau électrique d’Hydro-Québec s’effondrent sous le poids de la glace. Une semaine après le début de la crise, plus de 500 mille abonnés d’Hydro-Québec étaient toujours privés d’électricité.

Une dépression en provenance du sud des États-Unis est en route vers le Québec. Ce système apportera plusieurs types de précipitations et des vents violents au cours de la nuit de dimanche à lundi et de la journée de lundi.
